Berries and Cream Sweater
The red stripe has a strawberry design; the blue stripe is close set baubles representing blueberries. Between them, the white sea-foam pattern represents cream.

Materials: Patons Canadiana, 100% worsted weight yarn, 50g/114yd balls. Red - 2 balls, white - 2 balls, blue - 3 balls.
Needles: American size 6 straight needles, dp needles, and 24" circular needle. American size 5 straight needles, dp needles, and 24" circular needle. Crochet hook size F.
Finished size: 26" chest to fit child's size 4.
Sweater is worked from the top down.
Abbreviations:
dp + double pointed
st/sts = stitch/stitches
k = knit
p = purl
MB = make a bauble (see special instructions)
yo = yarn over (yarn forward)
tog = together
tbl = through back loop
ML = make a loop (see special instructions)
sl2 k-wise = slip the next 2 stitches from left-hand to right-hand needle inserting right-hand needles as you would to knit the stitches
p2sso = pass the 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch and off the end of the right-hand needle
Special stitch instructions:
MB: In the next stitch, k1 through the front loop and without removing the stitch from the left-hand needle, * k1 through the back loop, k1 through the front loop, repeat from * once. There will be 5 sts worked in the 1 sts. ** Turn work and p the 5 sts, Turn work and k the 5 sts. Repeat from ** once. Pass the 2nd sts from the end of the needle over the 1st st and off the end of the needle 4 times, leaving one st of the 5. Bauble made.
ML: Insert crochet hook from front of work through center purl st between yo's in 4th row down. Pull a loop of yarn through to the front of the work and place it on the right-hand needle pulling it so that it is neither too loose nor too tight.
Front:
Using size 6 straight needles and one strand of blue, cast on 16 sts for right front. With second strand of blue, cast on 16 sts for left front. Work right and left fronts simultaneously until row 10.
Row 1: knit.
Row 2: purl.
Row 3: Right front: (k3, MB) x 3 work to end, increasing 1 sts at neck edge. Left front: increase 1 st at neck edge and when there are 4 sts on right hand needle (MB, k3) x3, k1.
Row 4: purl.
Row 5: Right front: k1, (MB, k3) x 4, increasing 1 st at neck edge. Left front: increase 1 st at neck edge and when there are 3 sts on right hand needle (MB, k3) x 3, MB, k2.
Row 6: left front: purl, casting on 2 sts at neck edge. Right front: purl.
Row 7: Right front: (k3 MB) x 4, k2, cast on 2 sts at neck edge. Left front: (k3, MB) x 4, k4.
Row 8: left front: purl, casting on 3 sts at neck edge. Right front: purl.
Row 9: Right front: k1, (MB, k3) x 4, MB, k2, cast on 3 sts at neck edge. Left front: k1, (k3, MB) x 5, k2.
Row 10: purl 23, left front, cast on 10 sts, break off strand from right front and continue working with one strand of yarn, purl 23, right front.
Row 11: (k3 MB) x 5, k15, (MB, k3 x 5, k1.
Row 12: purl. Break off blue.
Change to white:
Rows 13 & 14: knit.
Row 15: k6 * yo x2, k1, yo x3, k1, yo x4, k1, yo x3, k1, yo x2, k6, repeat from * to end.
Row 16: knit, dropping all yo's off needle.
Row 17 & 18: knit.
Row 19: k1, repeat from * of row 15, end last repeat k1.

Row 21: knit. Break off white.

Using size 6 straight needles and one strand of blue, cast on 16 sts for left back. With second strand of blue, cast on 16 sts for right back. Work right and left backs simultaneously until row 4.
Row 1: knit
Row 2: left front: purl, casting on 3 sts at neck edge. Right front: purl.
Row 3: Left front: (k3 MB) x 3, k4, cast on 3 sts neck edge. Right front: k6, (MB, k3) x 3, k1.
Row 4: purl 19sts, right back, cast on 18sts, break off strand from left back and continue working with one strand of yarn, purl 19 sts, left back.
Row 5: k1, (MB, k3) x 5, k13, (k3, MB) x 5, k2.
Row 6, 8, and 10: purl.
Row 7: (k3, MB) x 13, k4.

With red and size 6 straight needles, cast on 48 sts. While following pattern as directed below, decrease s1 st each end every 8th row.

Row 28: knit, removing markers. Break off white.
Change to blue.
Rows 29: p3, place marker for start of pattern, p next 37, place marker for end of pattern, p to end.
Row 31, 33, 35, 37, and 39: purl.
Row 30: k to 1st marker, MB, * k3, MB, repeat from * to 2nd marker, k to end.
Row 32: k2tog tbl, k to 1st marker, k2, * MB, k3, repeat from * to 2nd marker, ending last repeat with k2, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.

Row 38: repeat row 30, removing markers. Break off blue at end of row 39.
Change to white.
Row 40: k2tog tbl, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.

Row 42: k7 * yo x2, k1, yo x3, k1, yo x4, k1, yo x3, k1, yo x2, k6, repeat from * ending k7.
Row 43: knit, dropping all yo's off needle.
Row 44 & 45: knit.
Row 46: k2, repeat from * of row 42, ending k2.
Row 47: repeat row 43.
Row 48: k2tog tbl, k to last 2 sts, k2tog. Break off white.
Change to red.
Row 49: p4, place marker for start of pattern, p 28, place marker for end of pattern, p to end.
Rows 50 - 67: repeat rows 2 - 19. Break off red.
Change to white. Using size 5 straight needles, k 1 row then work k2, p2 ribbing on remaining 32 sts for 2". Bind off loosely in rib.
Neck:
With whit and size 5 dp needles, pick up and k 60 sts evenly spaced around neck edge. Work k2, p2 ribbing for 1". Bind off loosely in rib.
Finishing. Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armhole openings distributing evenly and placing center of "strawberry" at shoulder seam. Weave in all loose ends.
