Blueberry Bed JacketDesigned by Mary J. Saunders This bed jacket is made with raglan sleeves and worked from the top down. The sleeves are covered with bobbles, keeping the arms warm for reading, etc. in bed.
Size: med-large, chest measurement of garment is 44” Yarn: Worsted weight 16 - 18 oz. Needles: US 7, or size needed to obtain gauge Gauge: 9 sts = 2 in. over stockinet stitch Abbreviations: Inc = increase K = knit k2tog = knit two stitches together k2togtbl = knit two stitches together through the back loops M1 = make one, make a new stitch by picking up the bar of yarn between the st just worked and the next st to be worked, be sure to twist the loop to prevent making a hole MB = make bobble. In the next stitch, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1. There will be 5 sts worked in the 1 st. ** Turn work and p the 5 sts, Turn work and k the 5 sts. Repeat from ** once. Pass the 2nd st from the end of the needle over the 1st st and off the end of the needle 4 times, leaving one st of the 5. Bobble made. P = purl Pm = place marker Rep = repeat Sl = slip (slip sts purl-wise) St/sts = stitch/stitches yo = yarn over Cast on 46 sts. Row 1: p2 (right front), pm, p8 (right sleeve), pm, p26 (back), pm, p8 (left sleeve), pm, p2 (left front). Row 2: k in front and back loops of 1st st, * m1, k1, sl marker, k1, m1, k to 1 st before next marker, rep from * until 1 st remains, k in front and back loops of this st. Row 3: p across. Row 4: k1, m1, ** k to 1 st before next marker, m1, k1, sl marker, k1, m1, k2, * MB, k3, rep from * until 3 sts before next marker, MB k1, m1, k1, sl marker, k1, m1, rep from ** once, k until 1 st remains, m1, k1. Row 5: rep row 3. Rep rows 3 - 5 until 126 sts, (18 sts for each front, 24 sts for each sleeve, 42 sts for back), ending with row 4 and inc 4 sts on neck edge in last st (k in front loop, * k in back loop, k in front loop, rep from * once). Next row: rep row 3, and inc 4 sts on neck edge in last st (p in front loop, * p in back loop, p in front loop, rep from * once). You now have 134 sts (22 sts for each front, 24 sts for each sleeve, 42 sts for back). Next row, A: k across, working m1 1 st before and after each marker. Next row, B: rep row 3. Next row, C: k to 1 st before next marker, m1, k1, sl marker, k1, m1, k2, * MB, k3, rep from * until 3 sts before next marker, MB k1, m1, k1, sl marker, k1, m1, rep from ** once, k to end. Next row, D: rep row 3. Rep last 4 rows, A-D, until 318 sts (45 sts for each front, 70 sts for each sleeve, 88 sts for back), ending row C, working bobble on 8th st after each 1st sleeve marker, then every 3rd st until 6 sts before 2nd sleeve marker.. Divide for armholes: p across 45 sts for right front, place next 70 sts for right sleeve on holder, cast on 8 sts, p across next 88 sts for back, place next 70 sts for left sleeve on holder, cast on 8 sts, p across 45 sts for left front. Work on theses 194 sts in st-st until body measures 10" below armhole division, ending p row. Next row: p across, turning row for hem. Continue in stst, p 1 row, k 1 row, until 1" after turning row. Bind off. Sleeves: cast on 4 sts, p across 70 sts from holder, cast on 4 sts at end of row (78 sts). Row 1: k1 k2togtbl, k6, * MB, k3, rep from * to last 9 sts, k5, k2tog, k1. Row 2: p across. Row 3: k across. Row 4: rep row 2. Rep rows 1 - 4 for sleeve until 48 sts remain ending with p row. Work 3 rows even. Bind off using a 3-stitch I-cord bind-off. Three st I-cord bind off: cast on 3 stitches to end of left-hand needle. *Next row: k2, k2tog, return 3 sts from right-hand needle to left-hand needle. Rep from * until all the sts are bound off. Cut yarn and thread on tapestry needle, pull end of yarn through remaining 3 sts and fasten off. Pockets (make 2): Cast on 21 sts. Row 1: k. Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8: p. Row 3: k2, * MB, k3, rep from * ending k2. Row 5: k. Row 7: k4, * MB, k3, rep from * until 5 sts remain, MB, k4 Repeat rows 1-8 two more times. Work 2 rows even. Bind off with 3-st I-cord bind off. Finishing: Sew sleeve and underarm seams. Sew hem along bottom edge. Make 3-st I-cord edging around neck, fronts, and bottom edges as follows: Starting at center back neck, pick up 5 sts for every 6 sts around neck edge. 5 sts for every 6 rows along front edges, and 1 st for each sts on turning row of bottom edge. Work same as 3-st I-cord bind off. Sew pockets in place. Make front closure (see detail picture). Make 2 pieces of 3-st I-cord approximately 9" long. Form one piece into 3-loop shape and sew in place on right front, leaving one loop free toward edge. Form the other piece into a figure 8 with straight end coming from the center. Tie a large knot into the straight end. Sew in place to left front. To fasten place free loop on right front over knot on left front.
