Christmas Cat Hat

for 2000 Knitlist Gift Patterns

 

Up ]

  • Size: Child’s medium/ large, Adult's small
  • Materials:  Worsted weight yarn red and green: main color 120yds; contrasting color 20 yds; white for whiskers 2 yds.
  • Needles: US # 9 set of 4 double pointed needles.
  • Gauge: over stockinette stitch 2” = 7 sts.

Abbreviations:

K = knit

P = purl

K2tog = knit 2 stitches together

St/sts = stitch/stitches

Rep = repeat

Rnd/rnds = round/rounds

Stst = stockinette stitch, k each round

With main color, cast on 66 sts.  Join and work in k1, p1 ribbing until 3”.  Continue in stst until 1” above ribbing.  Join contrasting color and work pattern chart over next 9 rnds, repeating every 6 sts, (work shaded or x'd blocks with contrasting color).  Continue in stst with main color until hat measures 4” above ribbing.

Decrease for top of hat:

Rnd 1: * k9, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16: k around.

Rnd 3: * k8, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 5: * k7, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 7: * k6, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 9: * k5, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 11: * k4, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 13: * k3, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnds 15 and 17: k2tog around.

 

Cut yarn leaving 6” tail.  Draw yarn tail trough remaining 6 sts on needles. Pull tight and secure.  Weave in all loose ends.

To make whiskers:  cut a 6” piece of white yarn and thread it around middle sts on bottom of cat’s head.  Tie in a square knot, trim ends to about ˝ inch, and unravel.
