Lacy Moebius ScarfDesigned by Mary J. Saunders A Möbius strip is a continuous, one-sided surface formed by twisting one end of a rectangular strip through 180° about the longitudinal axis of the strip and attaching this end to the other. When this concept is applied to knitting, it makes a useful scarf that, because of the half-twist, will lie flat under a coat. The Moebius (American spelling) scarf can be pulled over the head loosely or twisted into a figure 8 and brought over the head for a snug fitting head and neck scarf. This is my version.
Materials: 2 balls Douceur et Soie, lace weight fiber of 70% baby mohair and 30% silk. Straight knitting needles American size 6. Tapestry needle. Abbreviations:
Using open cast-on method and a piece of scrap
worsted weight yarn, cast on 80 sts. The
pattern is the Roman Stripe pattern from Barbara Walker's Second Treasury of
Knitting Patterns. Work 40 pattern
repeats, ending row 7. Make a
half-twist in fabric and join open cast-on sts to last row using Kirchner
stitch. Secure yarn and weave in
ends. Open cast-on: With working yarn, make a slip st and place it on both needles. Hold the piece of scrap yarn beside the needles. Bring the working yarn under the scrap yarn, over the needles from front to back, and in front of the scrap yarn. This will twist the working yarn around the scrap yarn. Continue in this method until all the stitches are cast on. Remove one needle and work the first row. When all the rows are finished, insert a needle in the stitches being held by the scrap yarn and then remove the scrap yarn. The sts are ready to weave. Roman Stripe Pattern: Row 1: k across. Row 2: k1, * yo, k1, rep from * until 1 st remains, k1. Row 3: k1, * p1, rep from * until 1 st remains, k1. Row 4: k1, * k2tog, rep from * until 1 st remains, k1. Rows 5 & 6: k1, * yo, k2tog, rep from * until 1 st remains, k1. Row 7: repeat row 1. Kirchner stitch: Bring the ends to be joined close together and parallel. With tapestry needle and working yarn work from right to left. Bring yarn through the back of the 1st st on far piece then in the front of the 1st st on near piece. Bring yarn through the back of next st on near piece and pull yarn up to make an even st. * Bring yarn in front of last st worked on far piece and through back of next st on far piece. Bring yarn in front of last st worked on near piece then through back of next st on near piece. Repeat from * until all sts are worked, pulling yarn up to make even sts as you go.
