St. Helen Jumper

A little history of this sweater:  I designed it using a lacy pattern, raglan sleeves, and a symmetrical pattern.  The majority of work was done during a trip to St. Helen’s, Merseysides, England.  We were visiting our daughter, Cate, and her family.  Tim, who was 3 and in nursery, had picked up much of the language and he said it was a jumper.  Hence the name.

·        Size: Medium, about size 12

·        Yarn: 14 oz. Sport yarn

·        Needles: # 3 circular and dp needles

·        Gauge: 1 repeat of pattern (18 sts) = 3”, 8 rows in pattern = 1”

Body:

With circular needle, CO 216 sts.  Join, being careful not to twist stitches.  Place marker for end of round.  Round 1: P to end.  Round 2: K to end.  Round 3: P to end.  Start pattern.  First round: * (K 2 tog) 3 x’s, (YO, K1) 6 x’s, (K 2 tog) 3 x’s, repeat from * to end of round.  Next three rounds: K around.  Repeat these 4 rounds for pattern.  Work in pattern until 15 in. from beginning, ending with rnd 3 of pattern.  Leave on needle.  Work sleeves.

Sleeves:

Work sleeves on dp needles.  Make 2 sleeves.  CO 90 sts, place marker for end of round.  Work 1st three rounds as for body.  Continue in pattern for 6 in. End with rnd 3 of pattern.  On last round, place last 3 sts of round and first 3 sts of next round on a holder for the underarm.

Raglan Yoke:

Join body and sleeves.  Following rnd 4 of pattern, work 102 sts of body front, place marker, place next 6 sts on holder for underarm, work 84 sts of right sleeve, place marker, work 102 sts of body back, place marker, place next 6 sts on holder for underarm, work 84 sts of left sleeve, place marker.  You now have 372 sts with 4 markers (it is helpful if last marker that indicates end of rnd is different than other 3).  Continue to work in pattern following chart A for pattern rnd 1.  On pattern rnds 2 & 4 work decrease rnds: * K1, K2 tog, work until 3 sts from marker, sl 1, K1, PSSO, K1, slip marker, repeat from * to end.  Work even on pattern rnd 3.  Repeat these 4 rounds, decreasing 8 sts on each decrease round until 164 sts remain.  Next rnd work 5th pattern rnd. Next rnd (decrease rnd in P): *P1, P2 tog, P each st until 3 sts from marker, move yarn to back and sl 1 as to P, P1, PSSO, P1, slip marker, repeat from * to end.  Next rnd: K each st.  Next rnd: repeat decrease rnd in P ending with 156 sts.  Cast off loosely in K.

Finishing:

Weave underarms together.  Slip 6 sts from holders for right underarm, onto 2 pd needles.  Slip the adjacent st on each side of these 6 sts onto each end of the needle so there are 8 sts on each needle.  (This will prevent a hole.)  Hold the needles parallel to each other and weave the sts tog using Kitchener Stitch.  Repeat for left underarm.  Weave in all ends.

Kitchener Stitch:

Step 1: Thread a tapestry needle with yarn.  Insert it through the 1st st on the back needle as if to knit.  Pull the yarn through, but leave the st on the needle.

Step 2: Insert the needle through the 1st st on the front needle as if to knit.  Pull the yarn through and drop the st off the needle.

Step 3: Insert the needle through the next st on the front needle as if to purl.  Pull the yarn through and leave the st on the needle.

Step 4: Insert the needle through the 1st st on the back needle (the st you left on the needle in Step 1) as if to purl.  Pull the yarn through and drop the st off the needle.

Repeat these 4 steps until all the sts are worked.

Chart A:

1st  pattern rnd: *(K2 tog) 2 x’s, (YO, K1) 5 x’s, (K2 tog) 3 x’s, continue in pattern as established until 15 sts before marker, (K2 tog) 3 x’s, (YO, K1) 5 x’s, (K2 tog) 2 x’s, slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

2nd pattern rnd: *K1, K2 tog, (YO, K1) 4 x’s, (K2 tog) 3 x’s, continue in pattern as established until 13 sts before marker, (K2 tog) 3 x’s, (YO, K1) 4 x’s, K2 tog, K1, slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

3rd pattern rnd: *K2, (YO, K1) 3 x’s, (K2 tog) 3 x’s, continue in pattern as established until 11 sts before marker, (K2 tog) 3 x’s, (YO, K1) 3 x’s, K2, slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

4th pattern rnd: *K3, (YO, K1) 2 x’s, (K2 tog) 2 x’s, continue in pattern as established until 9 sts before marker, (K2 tog) 2 x’s, (YO, K1) 2 x’s, K3, slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

5th pattern rnd: *K1, (YO, K1) 2 x’s, (K2 tog) 2 x’s, continue in pattern as established until 7 sts before marker, (K2 tog) 2 x’s, (YO, K1) 2 x’s, K1, slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

6th pattern rnd: *K2, YO, K1, K2 tog, continue in pattern as established until 5 sts before marker, K2 tog, YO, K1, K2, slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

7th pattern rnd: *K3, continue in pattern as established until 3 sts before marker, K3, slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

8th pattern rnd: *K1, continue in pattern as established until 1 sts before marker, K1, slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

9th pattern rnd: *K2, (K2 tog) 2 x’s, (YO, K1) 5 x’s, (K2 tog) 3 x’s, continue in pattern as established until 17 sts before marker, (K2 tog) 3 x’s, (YO, K1) 5 x’s, (K2 tog) 2 x’s, K2 slip marker, repeat from * to end of rnd.

Repeat 1st through 4th pattern rnds.
