Materials: 1 ball Sugar’n Cream® cotton 4 ply worsted weight 2.5 oz.; straight knitting needles size US 7

Size: Approximately 10 in. square                                  

Gauge: 4sts = 1”

 

Abbreviations:

K = knit

K2tog = knit 2 sts together

P = purl

Rep = repeat

Sl = slip

St/sts = stitch/stitches

Yo = yarn over

This washcloth is worked on the bias.  Start at the corner.

Cast on 4 sts.

First row: knit across.

Second row: k2, yo, knit to end.

Rep second row until 9 sts.

 

Now the cloth will increase in pattern.  Work the increasing pattern 7 times.

Increasing Pattern (6 rows):

Row 1a: k2, yo, * k2, yo, k2tog, k2, rep from * until 1 st remains, k1.

Row 2a, 4a, and 6a: rep second row.

Row 3a: k2, yo, * k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, rep from * until 3 sts remain, k3.

Row 5a: k2, yo, * k4, yo, k2tog, rep from * until 5 sts remain, k5.

Repeat these 6 rows for 7 repeats of pattern, 51 sts.

 

You are near the center and will work one transition pattern.

Transition pattern (6 rows)

Rep rows 1a and 2a (53sts)

Next row: k1, k2tog, yo, * k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, k1, rep from * until 2 sts remain, k2. (53 sts)

Next row: k1, k2tog, yo, k to end. (53sts)

Next row: k1, k2tog, yo, * k2, yo, k2tog, k2, rep from * until2 sts remain, k2. (53 sts)

Next row: k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k to end. (52 sts).

 

Now the cloth will decrease in pattern.  Work the decreasing pattern 7 times.

Decreasing Pattern (6 rows):

Row 1b: k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k3, * yo, k2tog, k4, rep from * until 2 sts remain, k2.

Rows 2b, 4b, and 6b: k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k to end

Row 3b: k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k1, * k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, k1, rep from * until 3 sts remain, k3.

Row 5b: k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k1, * yo, k2tog, k4, rep from * to end.

Repeat these 6 rows for 7 repeats of pattern, 10 sts.

 

Finish with a corner.

Continue with row 1b until 4 sts remain.  Work one row even.  Bind off.  Weave in the ends.
